ED medications | The Best Drugs
Are you aware the treatment options used for erectile dysfunction? Before prescribing you a medication, your doctor will make sure to address any underlying health conditions such as high blood pressure that could be causing or worsening the condition. Thereafter, you will get treatment that the doctor considers to be the best in your particular case. Some of the common treatment options available for ED include the following.
- Medication Treatment
All ED drugs work by relaxing your smooth muscles and improving blood flow to the penis, which makes it easier for you to get an erection and maintain it for long enough to complete sexual intercourse. Most men who suffer from erectile dysfunction have been treated successfully by use of oral medications such as Generic Viagra (sildenafil), Levitra (vardenafil), and Generic Cialis (tadalafil). And in addition to these three ED drugs approved by the FDA, there are also many generic ones such as Kamagra, Vigora and Silagra among others.
This drug was the first erectile dysfunction oral medication to be approved. The drug has proved to be very effective, but like all potent drugs, Viagra can cause certain side effects in patients. Some of them include headaches, vision and hearing impairments, and erections that last for longer than 4 hours (also known as priapism).
This drug came into market a few years after Viagra. However, it quickly gained popularity and proved to be just as effective as the blue pill. Levitra also has its own side effects that are more or less similar to those of Viagra.
This drug stands out a bit from the two abovementioned. Firstly, other than treating erectile dysfunction, this drug has also been proven to treat benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). Secondly, Cialis is known to have the longest duration of its effect among all the ED drugs. It can last for up to 36 hours while both Viagra and Levitra work for about 5-6 hours after consumption.
- Generic ED drugs
There are scores of ED drugs that simply copy the branded ones. Habitually, they consist of the same active ingredients and act in the same way. However, since they haven’t been approved by the FDA, these drugs can only be purchased online. On the plus side, generic drugs cost much less as compared to branded ones.
All these drugs fall into the same class of medication, namely PDE5 inhibitors. They work by inhibiting the action of a certain enzyme in the male body which, when in large concentration, does not allow the smooth muscles in the penis to relax. As soon as the enzyme is inhibited by an ED drug, the smooth muscles relax, which results in an increased blood flow to the penis. So as you can see, PDE5 inhibitors act on the physiological level.
Many patients wonder if they can get an erection any time after taking these drugs. The truth is, taking an ED pill will not lead to an automatic erection. One has to be stimulated sexually for the drug to start working; they are not aphrodisiacs.
Before taking any of these drugs, you should ensure that you get your doctor’s approval since PDE5 inhibitors have some counter-indications. You should avoid these drugs if you:
– Have any problems with blood pressure.
– Suffer from liver disease, eye complications or a heart related disease.
– Take nitrate drugs such as nitroglycerin.
– Have had a stroke in the past 6 months.
This is another kind of treatment for erectile dysfunction where one injects a medicine directly into the penis to get an erection. Some of the medications of this kind include papaverine, alprostadila and phentolamine among others. This treatment may have side effects such as prolonged erections, bleeding from the injection spot and formation of fibrous tissue at the injection site or within the penis.
- Replacement of Testosterone
Do you know that low levels of testosterone might cause or complicate erectile dysfunction? In such circumstances, it becomes necessary to carry out testosterone replacement therapy to correct the situation. This therapy can be delivered through oral medication, injections, subcutaneous pellets and gel among others.
Indeed the list of options that can be used to treat erectile dysfunction nowadays is long. Sometimes even simple lifestyle changes can help you get rid of ED. But if those common treatment options have failed to bring the desired results, your doctor may suggest surgery and penile implants as a radical solution to your ED problem.
